What's so Special about R.I.?
Bob reminds us that our hometown is a special place. That's why those of us who've moved away keep coming back. I especially think of certain foods: When I was there for the reunion I HAD to have a Maid Rite and a Harris pizza (I know Someone has a recipe for Maid Rite). I understand that Boetje's Mustard has won an international competition? Those are only a couple examples, and I'm sure you all can add to the list. ~~nancy

Boetje's mustard wins international competition
February 22, 2008 4:00 PM
NAPA VALLEY, Calif. -- Boetje's Dutch Style Stone Ground Mustard, made by Boetje Foods Inc., Rock Island, won the gold medal for best coarse-grained mustard during a recent 2008 worldwide mustard competition.
More than 400 mustards from seven countries were entered in 19 categories. Countries represented were Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and the U.S. The competition was part of the 15th annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival.
Award winners will get medals at a March 14 event at the Black Stallion Winery in Napa. The event is called "The Awards -- A Spicy Soiree."
Several reunions ago while having Sunday morning brunch at the Maid Rite, Marty Hoffeditz marveled at how he had failed in his lifelong quest to duplicate the perfect Maid Rite. He had tried different mixtures of ground meat and onions, multiple seasonings and sauces, and even steamed the buns. Appears he was over thinking the process. As one of those existentialist chefs aid, simplify, simplify …
MAID RITE RECIPE
2 pounds ground beef
Minced onions, any amount
1 can Coca-Cola (see note)
Brown ground beef
Add onion
Add can of Coca-Cola after meat is browned
Simmer until Coca-Cola evaporates
Serve on buns
Note: Diabetics use Diet Coke.
I don’t remember the Maid Rite posting that they offered diabetic safe food …
Marty, now you can start unlocking the secret formula for Coca-Cola. I think its some mixture of coca leaves, raw sugar, and pork products. Also I'm not sure they ever stopped using cocaine.
What’s so special? The only, I think, Bi-State St Patrick’s Day parade in the Nation, Even the Parrot Heads were wearing the green crossing over from Illinois to Iowa. And those party buses, I don’t think the passengers were just along for the parade sights.
I’ll send along a couple of parade photos to Nancy. Maybe she can post them for all to share.
For those of us living in the Quad Cities, sending along event photos for Nancy to post might be of interest to those outside of the area.
Bob
Bob,
I appreciate you taking the time to post the photos of the parade. I love reading our blog and looking at photos too! I hope you will continue to do so.
Mary
Mary: My job was easy, our Grandson was viewing the parade and we recorded the event.
I shared the photos with Nancy and she took the time to put the post together.

Ann H has sent a site with another recipe for Maid Rites. Sorry, you'll have to copy & paste this url:

Thanks Ann!
What I also use to love is going down to get a Coney Island Hot Dog with all the works.
I don't suppose that cafe is still around is it?
