Travels, Anyone?
We've had a request to start a Travels conversation! In February, how many of us (especially those in the north where the ice, snow and below freezing temperatures taunt us daily) dream of getting away. I, for one, get this feeling every February, and this year it's more intense than ever! SO--what are your suggestions? What place would be a great get-away? Do you have any travel experiences you'd like to recommend? Places, prices, means of travel--anything? How about invites--well, maybe that's asking too much. Let's hear from you! --nancy

No warm southern climes for this one: http://www.eelpoutfestival.com/ (put this in your browser)It’s still a whole bunch of fun. Just one of the many reasons to head to Northern MN for winter time fun. Snowshoeing, cross country ski, four-wheelers and snowmobiling and ice fishing.
Walker, MN and Leech Lake are in the middle of the Chippewa National Forest. I know some of us from the class of 62 head North during the summer. Not sure how many make the trip north in the winter, probably not many. Just remember, it’s a dry cold.

Try the east side of South Florida. Stay in Delray Beach at Crane's or the Colony. Both are very charming If you must be on the beach, there's the Marriott at twice the price and half the charm.
Delray has a wonderful beach and tons of night life. Atlantic Ave. has something going on all of the time. It's not a secret any more.
Drive 20 minutes north on A1A and you'll find yourself in Palm Beach.
Eat at Taboo's where the rich and famous hang out. Boca Raton is next door to Delray and you can go snorkeling at Red Reef Park in Boca.
It's an easy drive from Delray to South Beach (an hour) and the Keys (3 hours.) On Key Largo you can swim w/the dolphins and the second Key is Islamorada and once you've seen Key West, Islamorada is the place to go.
Delray is on the northern tip of the Everglades and in five minutes you can be at Loxahachee where you can get as close to 10 to 12 foot alligators as you care to be. And you can paddle through the Everglades on a canoe...how cool is that.
Get in touch if you're down my way.
Airports are Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach. Boca if you have your own plane...you fortunate person.

If you are in the Keys and plan to explore the underwater world, Key Largo is the site of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Stephen Frink Photographic (Rocky Class of 67) is based in Key Largo at mile maker 102.5. http://www.stephenfrink.com. Steve is the world's most widely published underwater photographer. Steve’s staff can provide you with everything you need to know about dive/photo opportunities throughout the Keys.
We have made the trip several times. While not a diver, we signed up for one of the resort courses available. The morning was instructional and the afternoon was the dive/photo trip.
Yes, this is a slightly blatant promotional post for my brother, but, that’s ok, isn’t it?

I'll take San Diego any day or time of the year. Always a great climate. Although the water is a bit cold. We go every year to Solana Beach (just north of S.D.). The kids go with us most years.
When it comes to travel, I sometimes forget that a trip down the street can be an adventure. Living in the Quad cities has become an adventure.
Throughout the year, almost every weekend has a special event. Once the snow clears, there are music events in the parks, bicycle races through the streets, go-cart races through the streets, road races all over town, food festivals and trails for biking, running and walking.
One of my favorite weekends is BIX weekend. The BIX Jazz Festival, July 24th - July 27th, is music in the parks, art on the street, food everywhere, the BIX seven mile run, usually with 10,000 other runners, “a party in motion” and friends hosting a keg and barbeque. This year RAGBRAI is in town. RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Ride Across Iowa) Missouri Valley, July 19th - LeClaire, July 24th, finishes up in LeClaire, Iowa, just up the river.
Before we head north for the fall colors, I finish up the season with the Quad Cities Marathon, a run through Moline, Bettendorf, Davenport, Rock Island and the Rock Island Arsenal. Last year, instead of running, I volunteered at various sites along the course and saw the other side of the event. There are bands all along the route and good crowds along the way.
Here are some links for you to use for the next time you plan a trip home to Rock Island.

Italy was fantastic! Loved the art, architecture, and Basilicas of ancient Rome, shopping in Florence and Venice, but especially enjoyed the peace of Assisi and the beautiful Tuscan countryside. Would love to return and get out of tourist areas.
Also I heartily recommend Nova Scotia for beautiful scenery. We rented a car and drove around southern coast, stopping here and there. Being a water person, I was especially taken with the luxurious parks with waterfalls, and the high tides at Truro and the Bay of Fundy. When we arrived, the fishing boats at the Bay were resting on their sides on dry land. Soon the tide began rolling in, and the boats righted themselves. Within an hour or so, they were floating on deep water. Fascinating to watch the power and beauty of the tides.
